Reisverslag Eerste week
24 mei 2014
Arriving in Lisbon, I was welcomed by Filipa. She is an awesome and nice girl who made me feel at home.
On the second day I started my journey to Tojeiro where Rudi and Katarina live. First I took the train to Portimão which was a lovely trip with loads of olive trees.
In Portimão it was quite a challenge to find the bus stop. Nobody knew where the street was until I passed this lady who took me all the way up until the bus stop.
After a weird bus ride I arrived at Tojeiro.
Not expecting this, I was welcomed by quite some people, all woofers and workawayers, preparing for Pizza Night. Good timing to arrive. Lots of chopping, rolling dough, grating cheese (which is actually a good exercise for the arms with this marvelous tool), …
The pizzas are made in a stone oven which makes them super delicious. This night with its pizzas is rather popular in the area. Over more than 80 people (approx.) came over and enjoyed the pizzas and drinks at the Bamboo Bar.
Tojeiro… While I expected it to be rural and quite rudimental, I had some difficulties adjusting to all of it. It is quite overwhelming to go from a city life to this kind of life.
To get more acquainted with my new surroundings and myself within, I took a walk to this small lake not far from the camp. Singing and dancing my way up, the scenery took my breath away. The lake is quite small but very soothing for a troubled mind.
The people… The woofers and workawayers that I’ve met so far, are all wonderful and open minded people. Even though there are quite some differences in age, character and life experiences, all of us get along very well. Already in my first week I have learned a lot from them.
Also there are a lot of different nationalities coming from all over the world to have this experience. There is Xander & David from the Netherlands, Eva from Kazachstan, Sarah from Canada, Juli & Iris from Germany, Martin from Uruguay, Johan from Sweden, Kerri from Ireland, Shannon & Annie from the USA, …
The animals… There are some sheep, an awesome cat and three dogs. Louie is my favorite dog, he is so loyal and often comes to walk with you when talking a walk up to the lake.
The work… After a weekend of resting and being quite lazy, I started my first task… weeding. On the other days I mostly did kitchen duty and some more weeding. Kitchen duty is quite interesting as you have to be very creative with food supplies that are available. Since pizza night was calmer than normal there was a lot of dough left and we ate Cibattis almost all of the coming week.
The music… A few people are guitar players which makes for some musical evenings and afternoons.
The big lake… Last Saturday we went to the big lake which is about an hour walk. The lake is so beautiful and there are almost no people around.
So this was my first week of adventure in Portugal. Although I am still adjusting, I am having the time of my life here and met a lot of awesome people.
